Feature | Note |
---|---|
Author attributions | Frequent. |
Binding | Pre-Bound. Many blank pages; suggesting this book was purchased with this binding. Calf with double rectangle pattern; middle in lighter colour. 2 clasps. some bookworm holds on back cover and in blank section |
Hands | Multiple. First hand in first section (17 leaves, 34 pages) is quite loose and informal. Second is smaller and neater. Both hands seem to indicate Charles Earle as author of items compiler. |
Indications of use | Subsequent cross-outs and annotation of many of the self-epitaphs. |
Item formatting | Variable; both sections have freehand double horizontal line in right-hand margin to mark ends of some items. First (later) section has some pages ruled in half vertically to facilitate short-lined verses. |
Organization | Initials C E on spine |
Original poetry | Yes, entirely. According to the First Line Index, all poems are by Charles Earle, except one by "Mrs. K—lly." |
Ownership mark | Final page includes note: 'This following last Epitaph shall be my Choice (Transcribd here Aug: 7th 1768)' |
