Author attributions | Rare. |
Binding | Pre-bound, blank paperbook. Two continuous hands with additions by a third on the last two pages, partial margin rules. Panelled calf. |
Hands | Three total, two primary. Hand 1 covers pages 1 to 99, then Hand 2 takes over from page 99 to 169. There are two small additions by a third hand on pp. 169–170. |
Indications of use | Signature trials on front flyleaf by Mrs. Howard Pigott Esqr. Two consecutive hands suggest that the second copyist took over the book, completing the first copyist's final poem and concentrating on the same themes. Clean copy except for a cross-out on p. 169 of a short potentially original rather out of place love poem. |
Item formatting | Hand 1: Double lines under titles and in-between poems; frequent use of numbered stanzas. Hand 2: Decorative swirls between items and under/over titles; frequent use of numbered stanzas. |
Original poetry | Probably not, except for the crossed-out and incomplete love poem on p. 169. |
Ownership mark | “Mrs. Frances Pigott” and “W: Pigott. L.L.B.” on inside front cover; signature trials for “Mrs. Howard Pigott Esqr.” on front fly-leaf. |
Page layout | Paginated except for the final two pages. Red ruled margins up to p. 105. The first hand is more generous with space than the second, occasionally skipping entire pages between poems. |
Table of Contents | Yes, titled "The Index" at the end of the book in Hand 2. |
